Off and Running!

This year has started with a flurry of activity, almost as if we never took a break! September came and went in the blink of an eye. Some of the highlights of this past month are...

Open House

So many families came to see the wonderful work their children are doing at OQS. There was an easy flow to the night and a hum of conversation as students showcased their work and teachers shared their curriculum. We ended the night with a demonstration of our new outdoor pizza oven. The garde club made pizza ahead of time and families got a chance to make their own mini pizzas.

Instructional Teaming

OQS staff is hard at work combining their expertise and working together to form instructional teams that consist of classroom teachers and special educators. These teams can often be found teaching side by side in the classroom, taking turns at being the "lead" teacher. This model gives all students greater access to the content being taught and can provide a high level of support for those students who might be struggling with a particular concept or skill and those that are needing to be challenged.

STEAM Time

New this year is a block of time once a week in which students are engaged in high level, hands on, problem solving tasks that require them to use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Our STEAM teachers are Mrs. Whitney and Mrs. Newton accompanied by our highly skilled paraeducators. The first unit we are working on is designing a model of a home they might build for a specific group of people.
We recently received over $1500 worth of makerspace materials and kits that include robotics, circuits, and other electronic building devices through a donorschoose campaign. So many generous folks donated money for us to but these materials. We are truley thankful for such generosity!

After such a tremendous start I can hardly wait to see what next month brings!

Gearing up for GREATNESS!

As the air begins to cool and summer winds down I can see the leaves starting to change already! Can it be true? Is it time for school to start again? Every year I get the same nervous feeling about the first day of school. There are new faces to greet at the door, changes to the building (new paint and carpet), the smell of new wax on the floors and new learning about to begin. This feeling of excitement has been building over the past several weeks and teachers begin to trickle in working hard to set up the classrooms and get materials ready for their students.

There are few changes you'll notice when you walk into the building on the first day of school. Our library has all new carpet and some cafe style seating. More cool furniture is on order and will be coming shortly so you'll get a chance to see it transform before your very eyes!

Our Gym has undergone a complete facelift! The walls have been repainted a beautiful two-toned teal to match the floor and wall mats. The wolf on the wall really pops out at you and is now a focal point in the room. The folding doors are also a dark teal and the floors have such a tremendous shine to them, you'll think they are still wet! You won't believe your eyes when you see it. If you get a chance to see Carl, our janitor, please be sure to compliment him on the floor- he spent many, many hours making sure it came out just right.

As always, please be sure to stop in and say hello. I'd love to spend a few moments with you welcoming you and your family back to OQS.

Another Glorious Year Ends

Once again we find ourselves at the end of another glorious year at OQS. If you were to look back on all of the facebook posts, classroom blogs, and special events, I think you would agree that OQS continues to be a very special place where students are actively engaged, parents are involved, teachers are passionate and where we all support each other and celebrate learning. Hallways were adorned with student projects, artwork, essays, and special messages.

Baking club, coding club, and drama club were all added to our long list of opportunities students at OQS can participate in; chess club, garden club, ski days, challenge group, girls on the run, wolves on the prowl to name a few. We’re looking forward to continuing these and adding a new STEAM team next year! Our fabulous group of parents who serve on the PTO along with all of the volunteers who support their efforts have made these clubs successful!

This is my favorite time of the year and my least favorite time of the year. This may sound a bit strange but it's true! It’s my favorite time of the year because I get a chance to look back through all of the many photos and reflect on all of the wonderful things that have happened this year; so much learning, joy, and enthusiasm! It is amazing to see the all of the wonderful work our staff has done to create engaging learning experiences for our OQS students and families; math night, crock pot cook off, holiday and spring concerts, science celebration day, forest kindergarten, green screen presentations, makerspace activities, pilgrim feast, green eggs and ham breakfast, hallway birthday bulletin board, star card photos, whole school PAWS celebrations, DENS meetings, community meetings, Kindergarten play, outdoor band class, project based learning projects, science experiments, river writing, PAWS squad presentations, spelling bee, I Love to Read Spirit Week, sled dog visit, lunch with a loved one, biography fair, just to name a few!

It’s my least favorite time of the year because it means the year has come to an end and everyone is about to go home for the summer. It gets very quiet here and I wander the halls (well...and do work at my desk) patiently waiting for the halls to fill up again with children’s laughter, chatter, excitement, and joy! I wish you all a wonderful summer to enjoy much needed family time. Time to explore, talk, giggle, get dirty, enjoy the outdoors, sing, create, and make memories!
